Applied Micro Electronics
Building sustainable low-code capabilities at AME in only one month adding immediate business value.

About AME
Applied Micro Electronics (AME) is a high-tech company based in the Brainport region of Eindhoven. AME designs and manufactures advanced electronic systems and modules for a wide range of industrial applications. From electronics development and software to production and testing, AME supports its customers throughout the entire product lifecycle. Reliability, quality, and scalability are deeply embedded in everything they do.
Challenges & Discovering Mendix
AME was looking for a low-code partner to explore what Mendix could mean for their organization. The ambition went beyond building a single application: AME wanted to understand how low-code could be applied across multiple facets of the business and how knowledge could be sustainably embedded internally. After careful consideration, AME decided to collaborate with The Orange Force to explore the full capabilities of the Mendix low-code platform. This included many conversations between The Orange Force’s team and various AME team members from different departments such as operations, management, business, and IT.
The Orange Force’s Approach
The Orange Force partnered with AME to successfully launch Mendix within the organization: technically, organizationally, and culturally.
The collaboration focused on:
- Co-development of the first Mendix application, allowing AME employees to learn by doing while The Orange Force ensured quality, speed, and best practices.
- Training internal developers at an intermediate level, ensuring Mendix knowledge was broadly available and not dependent on a single individual.
- Product Owner training, enabling AME to effectively manage requirements, priorities, and collaboration between business and IT by including various departments such as management, an architect, operations, and IT.
The flexibility and short communication lines of The Orange Force made it possible to quickly adapt to AME’s evolving needs, creating momentum and confidence in the platform.

“At AME, production-level quality and stability are key. The Orange Force helped us train our team, introduce Mendix, and co-develop our first Mendix application. With their broad expertise across development and UI/UX, we achieved a smooth launch, and since then, we’ve built multiple applications ourselves.”

Solution and Enablement
The first application developed together replaces the old packaging solution and supports the manual packing process on the shop floor.
Each product, whether a PCBA, mechanical part, or assembly, has its own QR code. By scanning the code with a handheld scanner, the operator:
- Identifies the correct product and recipe.
- Receives the corresponding packing instructions.
- Completes the packing process manually.
- Sends a confirmation signal to SAP, indicating the product is packed and ready for the next step.
Mendix functions as a smart layer on top of SAP, combining flexibility with enterprise-grade integration.
Three principles guided the design:
- Stability – reliable performance in a production environment.
- Ease of use – intuitive, error-free operation for shop-floor employees.
- Integration – seamless alignment with existing AME systems.
Results & Impact
The project was successfully delivered, and the application is now fully live in production. It runs daily on more than 40 workstations and has become an integral part of AME’s operational process.
Beyond the application itself, AME has achieved much more:
- Full ownership of their applications and roadmap.
- Internal Mendix development capability.
- Clear and effective product ownership.
- High organizational awareness of low-code possibilities.
With Mendix, AME can now independently extend functionality and continue building new applications when the business requires it. Thanks to the collaboration with The Orange Force, AME has not only implemented Mendix as a technology, but truly embedded it within the organization. The first application proves its value every day on the shop floor and serves as a strong foundation for further digitalization. AME is now fully equipped to get the maximum out of Mendix, today and in the future.
